More than just a speed test
One of the primary tools that Highspeedinternet.com offers is its speed test tool. To remain competitive in search results, I oversaw the redesign of a new version of our speed test—assembling different ideas from across the team and facilitating feedback into a distinct concept. Once the direction was approved, I produced and presented animated prototypes to help develop and refine the tool interface and collaborated with the development team on the final production of our new tool.
Highspeedinternet.com's speed test combines speed test tool and frequently asked questions to give users a quick overview of their speed and what it all means.
Vision
We were looking to revamp our speed test tool to create a better experience that not only helped customers see their current internet speed results but also helped give more context to what those speeds actually mean—answering basic questions and giving them the next steps for how they could improve their internet experience, all from within the tool interface.
Process
After working through multiple versions of the speed test tool, the team set out to create something that did a better job of blending speed test content and speed test tool. While the speed test page’s content helped customers dive deep into understanding internet speeds, we wanted to highlight the most helpful information higher up the page. Additionally, the leadership team asked to create space to market our new native speed test apps. Trying to accomplish all these priorities while maintaining a clean interface that didn’t overwhelm customers proved a significant challenge as I worked through design prototypes.
While workshopping content needs with the content lead, I came up with the idea of incorporating an FAQ-style menu. This decision allowed us to prioritize and present content within the tool area without it overpowering the speed test interface and results. Once I had built out the final proof of concept, I worked with the content and engineering teams to refine content and functionality around the idea and align content to work in both the test’s pre and post-state instances.

Summary
This speed test design pushed beyond a simple speed result output. Collaborating with all functions of the team, I was able to design a tool that helped present customers with something more comprehensive while maintaining the simplicity of the interface, ultimately creating a better experience for customers trying to understand their results. Additionally, the experience kept our site’s speed test high in search result ranking and gave customers an additional path into the website—adding an opportunity to increase returning customers and building brand awareness.
